Meghalaya CM home attacked with petrol bomb: He is safe

Unidentified miscreants on Sunday night lobbed a petrol bomb at the residence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma following which a two-day curfew has also been imposed in capital Shillong, which will continue till 5 am on Tuesday.

Mobile internet services have also been snapped in several parts of the state.

According to police official report, the first bottle was lobbed at the front part of the house while the second one was thrown behind the backyard

While no one was hurt in the incident as the house was vacant, vandalism and arson have rocked the state capital and nearby areas.

The situation in Meghalaya had turned violent since Sunday, following the death of Chesterfield Thangkhiew, former leader of banned militant group Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

While the family has accused police officials of murdering him, director-general of police R Chandranathan had informed that Chesterfield was shot down by police officials in retaliation where he allegedly initiated an attack on a police team during a raid in his house in connection with a series of IED blasts in the state.

A police vehicle of the Mawkynroh Police Outpost was also set ablaze by unidentified men in Jaiaw locality in Shillong.

Meanwhile, in another development, amid the chaos in the state, Meghalaya home minister Lahkmen Rymbui resigned from his post on Sunday, demanding a judicial enquiry into the death of Chesterfield.

In a letter addressed to CM, he wrote, “I hereby express shock at the incident where (L) Chesterfield Thangkhiew was killed following the raid of police at his residence exceeding the lawful tenets of the law. Considering the gravity of the situation, I would request you to relieve the Home (Police) Department from me with immediate effect,” he said.
