Farm Laws: Days when Shashi Tharoor and Amarinder were singing a different tune

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar shared a Tweet from Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in which he had supported private sector participation in agriculture. Tharoor had said on January 23, 2010, that there was a need for private sector to move into grain storage.

The tweet @ShashiTharoor read: It seems we waste more wheat every year 2storage & distribution losses than Australia grows! Real need for pvt sector 2move into grain storage. This was clearly opposite to the stance that the Congress has adopted now in public regarding the participation of private players in farm related activities.

Incidentally, the Congress has been up in arms against the Centre’s three farm laws. This hypocrisy of the party has now been brought out by Javdekar.

In Punjab, ruled by the Congress, the government led by Captain Amarinder Singh has also passed a farm law under which the farmers are liable to face Rs 5 lakh fine, or face a jail term of five months if they failed to honour their contract. Criticising this “draconian provision”, BJP’s Gaurav Bhatia asked Rahul Gandhi when would the Punjab government repeal the “black law”.

Bhatia was responding to Rahul’s claim on Saturday that the Centre’s farm laws were not only dangerous for the farmers and labourers, but imperilled the nation and its citizens.
