The fifth phase of Bengal assembly polls, presently underway, is gathering its share of unpleasant incidents of violence.
OpIndia reports that one BJP polling agent was allegedly assaulted in West Bengal’s North Bardhaman districts in early hours of he day and the same happened to another one, Ajit Dhar, in Haroa constituency in the North 24 Parganas district. According to a report by Republic TV, Ajit was assaulted by a Trinamool worker who grabbed his shirt and threatened him against voting for BJP. He was then attacked with sticks by other Trinamool workers, says BJP. BJP has alleged that the party agent has suffered a fracture in his head. He has been admitted to local medical college.
The polling booths 265 and 272 in Shantinagar of Bidhannagar had incidents of stone-pelting. Both BJP and Trinamool workers got into a fistfight over allegations of booth rigging. Several women were reportedly injured.
In Minakhan assembly, crude bombs were hurled at poll booth 114. Trinamool has pinned to blame on Peeerzada Abbas Siddiqui’s party Indian Secular Front’s members. There was violence outside polling booth 114 in the same constituency too.
By 11.37 a.m, 36.02 per cent voter turnout had been recorded in the fifth phase of the assembly polls.
