Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana showed his extreme displeasure over “speculative” reports in certain sections of the media about the collegium meetings regarding judges’ appointments in the Supreme Court.
CJI Ramana, while speaking in the ceremonial function to bid farewell to Justice Navin Sinha who is retiring, said the process of appointment of judges is sacrosanct and has dignity attached to it and the media must understand and recognise the sanctity of this selection process.
“There were instances of deserving career progression of bright talents getting marred because of such irresponsible reporting and speculation. This is very unfortunate and I am extremely upset about it,” he added.
At the same time, the CJI also applauded those journalists who had not reported the leaked information.
“I appreciate the tremendous amount of maturity and responsibility displayed by majority of senior journalists and media houses in not speculating on such serious matter. Such professional journalists and ethical media are the real strength of the Supreme Court in particular and democracy in general,” he added.
Earlier today, reports said the Supreme Court Collegium led by Justice Ramana has recommended the names of nine judges for the elevation to the top court.
Among them is Justice BV Nagarathna, who could become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027.
The other names, as per sources, are senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General PS Narasimha, Justices Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, CT Ravi Kumar and MM Sundersh
